A binaural beat happens when each ear hears a slightly different tone and the brain perceives a third, pulsing “beat” at the difference between them. Here’s the mechanism in one paragraph: play a 200 Hz tone in your left ear and a 240 Hz tone in your right ear, and neither is unusual on its own. But your brain, comparing the two signals, generates the perceived beat of the difference between them — in this case, 40 Hz. You don’t hear it the way you’d hear a bass line; you feel it as a soft pulsing quality inside the tones.
