The Best Binaural Beat Frequencies for Focus, Sleep and Meditation
There isn’t one “best” binaural beat frequency — there’s a best one for each state you’re trying to encourage. 40 Hz (gamma) for focus, alpha for calm alertness, theta for meditation, and delta for sleep. Everything else is a variation on those four.
Here’s when to use each one, why, and the settings that actually make a difference.
40 Hz (gamma) — for focus and deep work
If you’re studying, coding, writing, reading long-form, or doing anything that needs sustained attention, this is the range. 40 Hz specifically has been associated with attention and cognitive integration in EEG research, and it’s the layer used in most serious focus music — including the subtle binaural layer under HALCYON’s focus worlds like Rainy Night Library and Alchemist Study.
How to use it: at low volume, in headphones, as a background layer under calm ambient music. You should barely be able to tell it’s there. Its job isn’t to entertain you — it’s to slightly stabilise your attention over a 60–90 minute work session so you don’t drift. Alpha (8–13 Hz) — for calm, alert relaxation
Alpha is the range associated with relaxed wakefulness — the state you’re in when you’re lightly reading, resting with your eyes closed but not sleeping, or coming down from an intense day. It’s a good choice for:
- The transition between work and the evening (reset, not asleep yet)
- Light reading or reflection
- Gentle winding down before a full wind-down routine

Alpha won’t help you focus on hard cognitive work — it’s a step below that. It also won’t put you to sleep. It sits in the useful middle where you’re calm but present.
Theta (4–8 Hz) — for meditation and the edge of sleep
Theta is the frequency of deep relaxation, meditation, the drifting quality just before sleep, and (in some research) creative daydreaming. It’s the go-to for a meditation session, particularly if you’re new to the practice and want a nudge into a settled state faster than pure silence gets you there.
Use it during: seated meditation, body scan practice, guided visualisation, or as a background layer during long, quiet reading. Don’t use it during work — it’s too settled for cognitive tasks and will make you feel slightly foggy.
Delta (1–4 Hz) — for sleep
Delta corresponds to deep, dreamless sleep — the heaviest, most restorative stage. As a binaural layer, delta beats are used as a background under sleep music, running for hours through the night. You’re not conscious for most of it, and that’s fine — the effect (when it works) is on the depth and continuity of your sleep, not on falling asleep faster.
How to use it: at low volume, playing throughout the night or at least the first sleep cycle. Don’t crank the volume up thinking it’ll work harder — loud audio actively degrades sleep quality regardless of frequency.
What about the other ranges?
Beta (13–30 Hz) — active thinking. Rarely used in binaural products because you’re already there when you’re awake and engaged. Some tracks use low-beta (14–15 Hz) for very light energising, but the effect is subtle and 40 Hz gamma is more common for focus.
Above 40 Hz. Doesn’t scale the way the marketing sometimes implies. “100 Hz super-focus” tracks aren’t a stronger version of 40 Hz; they’re just a different frequency, and one that doesn’t correspond to a specifically useful brain state.

Match the frequency to the task: work → 40 Hz gamma; relax → alpha; meditate → theta; sleep → delta. Anything else is fine-tuning that will make less difference than getting the environment right.
What actually matters more than the frequency
Two things overshadow the specific Hz choice: whether you’re wearing headphones, and how loud the audio is. Without headphones, no binaural effect happens at all — you’re just listening to detuned tones. With headphones but too loud, the tones fatigue your ears and the whole thing becomes counterproductive. Get those two right and the frequency choice is the smaller decision on top.
A simple starter stack
